Prayer is the most important thing you'll ever do and the easiest thing to feel you're failing at. The good news is that prayer isn't a performance. It's a relationship. And like any relationship, it has seasons — lush ones and dry ones, talkative ones and silent ones. The only failure in prayer is stopping.
The Church teaches that prayer is the lifting up of the heart to God. That's it. You don't need the right words, the right mood, or the right amount of time. You need a heart that turns. Even the turning itself is already prayer.
There are many ways to pray, and the Church keeps them all: vocal prayer (words, spoken or sung), meditation (thinking over Scripture or truth), and contemplation (resting quietly in God). Most lives need all three. Find the one that feels like breathing, and start there.
And the Church is honest about dryness. Some of the greatest saints lived years without feeling anything in prayer. They kept showing up — and the showing up was the prayer. Feelings are weather. Faithfulness is climate.
And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
The instruction isn't 'always feel something.' It's 'always pray and don't lose heart.' The two go together — keep praying, and the heart won't be lost.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.
When you can't pray, the prayer itself is the prayer. The Spirit takes your 'I don't know what to say' and makes it enough.
St. Teresa of Calcutta
She founded an order that prayed for hours a day — and then spent decades feeling nothing but silence in prayer. She called it the 'dark night,' and she didn't run from it. She stayed. And the staying taught her that love is not a feeling but a faithfulness, and that Christ is most present in the silence He seems absent from.
“Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, and listening to His voice in the depths of our hearts.”
Tear this out. Try one this week.
- ✦Pray for five minutes before you reach for your phone. The first voice you hear each day shapes the rest of it.
- ✦Keep a prayer list short enough to actually pray. Three names is enough.
- ✦When you don't know what to say, say that. 'I'm here. I don't have words.' It counts.
- ✦Go to Adoration once this month, even for ten minutes. Silence in front of the Eucharist does something words can't.
